A 3-Hour Conversation That Sparked a New Beginning
Wisdom and Life Lessons from a loving Mentor
Over the Easter holiday, I had one of those rare, soul-nourishing conversations with my mentor - the kind that leaves you feeling lighter, clearer, and strangely energised. It had been a while since we spoke at length, and honestly, I didn’t realise just how much I had missed our deep dives until we were knee-deep in one again.
Back in university, we met weekly—sometimes more—and I genuinely believe those sessions shaped the person I am today. Those regular conversations were a lifeline, a compass, and sometimes even a much-needed kick of motivation when I needed it most. Fast forward to today, and in just under three hours, my mentor helped me untangle a knot of challenges I’d been wrestling with (remember that issue I mentioned a few weeks ago? Yeah, that one).
Without getting lost in the tiny specifics, I want to share five powerful lessons that came out of that game-changing conversation. Buckle up—this might be a long one, but I promise it’s a ride packed with treasure.
1. Always Work From a Vision and Value System
If you’ve been part of The Life Quest community for any length of time, you’ve probably heard me shout this from the rooftops. Spoiler alert: My mentor is the one who planted that seed and nurtured it with endless wisdom.
If I had 10 seconds to give the world just one message, it would be this:
Build your life on a clear vision and unwavering values.
This one principle is life-altering. It’s the invisible framework that supports every decision, every pivot, and every dream you chase. It simplifies decision-making, gives you incredible clarity when the fog of uncertainty rolls in, and fuels a quiet confidence that carries you through tough times.
Now, I won’t lie to you—developing a personal vision and value system is hard work. It took me nearly a year of guided sessions to really carve mine out. Even after all that, I kept editing and changing it as I grew and priorities shifted. It is frustrating at times. It was and kinda still is messy and uncomfortable. But it was also the most worth it thing I have ever done. When you know what you stand for and where you want to go, life suddenly feels a lot less overwhelming and a lot more meaningful.
2. Dream BIG—Then Dream Even Bigger
There’s a quote from my favourite book that fits perfectly here:
Too often, we sell ourselves short. We lower the bar because we’re scared to fail, scared to be laughed at, or scared to face the bumpy road of real growth. As a result, many of us end up living lives that feel... just okay. Not terrible, but not exhilarating either.
The real tragedy is that deep down, we know we are capable of more. We feel it in quiet moments, we hear it in whispers when we’re honest with ourselves. But fear, excuses, and limiting beliefs hold us back.
Here’s the truth my mentor reminded me of:
You are powerful beyond measure.
You can do and become anything you set your mind and heart to. It won't be easy. It won't happen overnight. But if you stay committed to your vision, keep learning, and keep showing up, you'll get there. You will.
So, what’s that crazy dream you’ve been tucking away? Dust it off. Dream even bigger. You owe it to yourself to see what’s possible.
3. We Are Masters of Self-Sabotage (But We Don’t Have to Be)
Okay, full credit to me for the dramatic title—but hear me out.
We often underestimate our ability to solve our own problems because we underestimate the power of our own minds.
Your brain is the most sophisticated problem-solving machine on the planet. But like any machine, it needs the right inputs. If you're constantly feeding yourself negativity, junk food, toxic media, and chaotic environments, you’re operating at a fraction of your potential.
Think about it: What are you putting into your body and mind every day? What are you reading, watching, listening to? Who are you surrounding yourself with? Are you getting enough sleep and true rest?
A healthy, nourished mind is your secret weapon in this life.
When you deliberately create an environment that feeds your brain with positivity, nourishment, and inspiration, you'll be amazed at what happens. Solutions start popping up where before there were only walls. Ideas flow more freely. Confidence builds naturally.
Take care of your mind like you would take care of the most precious tool you own—because it absolutely is.
4. The Magic of Creative and Responsible Recreation
There’s a myth floating around that once school or big projects are over, you’ll magically have all this free time to relax. Spoiler: it’s a trap.
If you’re pursuing a life of meaning and excellence, time will always feel limited. You’ll have to be ruthless about what gets your attention, and leisure often gets shoved to the bottom of the list.
But here’s the paradox my mentor reminded me of:
Relaxation isn’t a luxury—it’s a necessity.
When you engage in activities that allow your conscious mind to unplug—gardening, painting, playing an instrument, golfing, dancing—you activate a secret superpower: your subconscious mind goes to work in the background, solving problems, making connections, and recharging your creativity.
High achievers often feel guilty for taking breaks, but the truth is, creative recreation is part of high performance.
Find those activities that bring you joy without demanding mental effort, and make them part of your rhythm. My mentor swears by gardening and golf. You might find your magic in hiking, baking, or even a good old-fashioned nap!
5. Everyone Needs a Mentor (Yes, You Too)
If there’s one thing I wish I could tattoo across everyone's forehead (metaphorically, of course), it’s this:
Get yourself a mentor.
Having a mentor isn’t just about getting advice—it’s about having someone in your corner who knows you, believes in you, and isn’t afraid to challenge you. And here’s the magic part: the longer you invest in that relationship, the better it gets. It’s an exponential curve, not a straight line.
During our conversation, my mentor kept referring back to things we had worked on a couple of years ago—things I hadn’t realised were recurrences. Yet he remembered, and that context gave him a unique ability to help me see how history was repeating itself in new clothes.
If you already have a mentor, nurture that relationship. Stay connected. Be vulnerable. Share your wins and your struggles.
And if you don’t? Start looking. There are so many incredible people out there willing to share their wisdom—you just have to be open and brave enough to ask.
I ended that three-hour call with a heart full of gratitude and a mind buzzing with fresh energy. It wasn’t that my problems magically disappeared. It’s that I was reminded how to carry them differently—with more grace, more strategy, and more faith. I hope this little window into my own journey offers you something valuable—something you can tuck into your own backpack for the road ahead. Here's to dreaming big, thinking clearly, resting deeply, and reaching out when we need help.
You’ve got so much inside you waiting to unfold—and I’m cheering you on every step of the way.
Wishing you a wonderful week ahead, full of new possibilities.
Cheers!
