Hello friends, I hope you had a lovely weekend and you are ready for yet another week! We are now officially into the second half of the year by the way - yep, time is indeed flying by…
In this season of The Life Quest, we’re exploring deep into the journey of purpose. We have identified that purpose is so powerful, so transformative and life-changing. We also admitted to the fact that finding it isn’t always easy.
Last week, we started out on our shared journey of discovery. I shared the first set of the promised practical tools to help discover one’s purpose (in case you missed it, the last 2 articles in this series are linked at the end of this issue).
This week, we are continuing along the same vein…
Have you ever stopped to really reflect on the path that brought you where you are, not just in passing thought, but in full, intentional detail? Hidden in your past, between your joys, your heartbreaks, your milestones, and your scars, are the threads of a deeper story. A story about who you are. What shaped you. What matters to you. And, possibly, what you were meant to do all along.
Today’s tool is one that helped me see my life with new eyes. It’s called the Life Timeline Exercise - a simple but deeply transformative reflection practice that invites you to look back, trace your story, and begin to make sense of who you are becoming.
We often rush through life from one season to the next, achievement after achievement, failure after failure, hoping that somewhere along the way, purpose will show up and introduce itself.
But here’s the thing: purpose rarely shouts at you from the future. More often, it whispers to you from the past. You just need to pause and take the time to listen.
The Life Timeline Exercise is about that listening. It’s about pausing the noise of the present so you can trace the patterns of your past, and possibly catch a glimpse of your future calling.

The Life Timeline Exercise
Here’s how it works:
1. Start with a blank sheet or page.
Draw a horizontal line across the middle of the page. This is your life timeline. On the left, mark your early years. On the right, mark your current age. You can divide it into five-year intervals or whatever feels natural.
2. Begin mapping your significant life moments.
These include both highs and lows. Key transitions. Turning points. Pivotal decisions. Setbacks. Victories. Relationships. Losses. Moves. Milestones.
Don’t rush, take your time! This is where the gold is. Depth is more important than breadth in this particular step.
3. For each key moment, reflect using these questions:
What happened?
How did it change me?
What lesson did I learn from this?
Would I want to help others going through something similar?
Take your time here. Write freely. Feel deeply. Don’t filter.
4. Now step back and look for patterns.
What do your most defining moments have in common?
What pain have you overcome that might be someone else’s roadmap?
What themes keep showing up? Growth, service, healing, teaching, leading…
That’s where the purpose begins to show itself.
My Timeline Taught Me This
My own experience with this exercise exposed common themes across a range of emotions, whether joyous highs or crushing lows. I began to notice that some of the hardest chapters in my life were also the ones that had given me the tools I now use to help others.
Moments of failure taught me humility.
Moments of heartbreak opened up compassion.
Moments of confusion taught me to listen more carefully.
And it hit me: the most painful part of my story, that one crushing defeat (story for another day), could actually be my greatest offering.
When I looked at the timeline, I no longer saw random events.
I saw preparation. I saw potential. Painful as it may have been, I saw purpose unfolding.
You Should Really Try This…
Because your life has not been random.
Because the pain you survived may hold a map for someone else.
Because the joy you’ve experienced may point to your unique gifts.
Because the story of your past might be the launchpad of your future.
You just need to trace it.
Your Life Quest Task
This week, make time for the Life Timeline Exercise.
Find a quiet space. Bring a notebook or tablet. Unplug from the noise for at least 45 minutes.
Start with a line.
Mark the moments.
Write down the memories, the emotions, the lessons.
Reflect. Then step back and look for what connects the dots.
You might just see yourself in a new light.
You might finally understand why some things happened the way they did.
You might even hear the whisper of your purpose becoming clearer.
And if you feel ready, I invite you to share your experience with us. What did you learn? What surprised you? What questions do you still have?
I wish you an awesome week ahead. Happy Exploring!
